How to Fill Holes in Wood Houses as You Prep to Paint then Sand
It would be nice if your wooden home stayed in good shape with only a little bit of home maintenance and repair. Only caulk and scrape some, put down some painting drop cloths, and slap on a new coat of durable house paint.
Well, it just is not so easy. Rather than easy, one almost always has to fill the wood exterior of your home.
This house of mine had to have more than just some new paint. The steel sheeting under my shingles did not go to the edge and allowed rainwater to soak the overhang board. Over time, the house’s wooden surface here shrunk and the paint fell away.
This repair I wanted to do on my own. I was worried whether wood putty would do the job.
My friend down the block patched his wood facing boards often fighting those darn flying termites. These jobs stood the test of time. I asked him his secret.

I knew how Bondo worked on cars. Bondo was heavy and durable. This auto filler could be planed. When he suggested doing this, I instantly knew that it would do the job.
With auto filler, the approach is to do the job in layers with thick layers at the outset and less material thereafter. You can even form shapes with molds, with ordinary kitchen wax paper and wood to shape. When sanding and finishing prior to painting all you need to do is to use one of the belt sanders for sanding the Bondo and wood smooth.
Homeowners with a wooden deck, consider the fact that you could also use Bondo to fix splits in the flooring of a wood deck design. It is useful, when you are sanding a redwood deck.
You should note that Bondo finishes with a reddish hew and that will be what you see, if you only use a transparent water proofing on a wooden deck. If you intend to seal a lumber deck repaired with Bondo, you might need to use prime and painting.
Also it is not necessary to go to a car parts place to acquire Bondo. It is easy to find Bondo at Lowes or Home Depot. Incidentally, my wood repair still looks great after several years.
